• Welcome to the PELLIC Virtual Learning Environment!

moodlePELLIC is an EU funded project that aims to provide a virtual learning space where students can practice business communication skills in English. The virtual learning environment (VLE) is based on the open source learning management system Moodle and designed for pedagogic use in tertiary level education, advanced vocational training and continuing education. You can learn more about PELLIC from the project website, or you can go to the "Resource & Support Area" here on the VLE website. You can quickly get an idea of the PELLIC blended learning course by checking out the materials and activities in the "Demo Area". You can make contact to other teachers and institutions interested or currently using the PELLIC approach via the "Training & Networking Area".

    Authentic materials & communication

In PELLIC courses, students in different countries interact while doing business for their companies, using their English as a lingua franca. The PELLIC VLE supports students by integrating audiovisual resources from real-life business situations, further enhancing the authenticity of the PE learning experience.

Moodle + Google Apps communication suite

    mo-go

The PELLIC VLE is connected to Google Apps services (single sign on). These services provide opportunities and support for authentic learning activities through simulated international business interaction. Students use these tools e.g. for efficient collaborative writing, and designing and managing a company website.

    task

    Task based approach

Practice Enterprise methodology is being implemented as a task-based approach: students accomplish meaningful tasks from different areas of business life (such as starting a company, advertising, buying and selling, tradefairs and exhibitions) and gain skill and knowledge on the language level, as well as on the business level.

    pilot

    Piloting

Pilot courses have taken place in four countries (Finland, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain). Practice Enterprise companies in these countries have been trading and interacting through the VLE. They have put together business plans, advertised their products to each other, engaged in competition and closed deals.

    Teacher support material

All PELLIC course activities developed in the project are documented in a teacher support booklet, including best-practice guidelines and suggestions for pedagogic embedding of the online components, making it easy for language teachers who want to run practice enterprise courses to adapt and extend the framework for their local needs.

    Contributions to the Moodle community

Modifications of software components and activity tools that have been developed during the project's lifetime are fed back to the Moodle community and made available for other teachers to use - e.g.

  • database preset: File repository
  • graphical user interface for embedded (CLOZE) questions
  • visual signposting templates, including user interfaces
  • Find out more about how the Moodle activity tools can be used in a PE course, and which add-ons and modifications have proved useful here.
